The Ottawa Viennese Winter Ball was first held in 1996 and has been officially sanctioned by the Austrian Government. It extends the 18th century tradition of the Vienna Opera Ball, which was created by Emperor Joseph II to make ballrooms available to more people. Each year, the ball celebrates the “coming of age” event for young people, and in Ottawa it is a modern fairytale for 24 young ladies and gentlemen. Dress for the ladies is floor length white ball gowns, and earlier this week David’s Bridal at Ottawa’s Trainyards opened up their doors and dress racks for the young ladies. There is nothing quite like watching the faces of these young ladies as they step out of the change room and see themselves in the mirror. Second best is watching the parents of course, as they realize their little girls are becoming women. It is a special evening and I was fortunate to be able to capture a few moments of joy.
